Book Proposal
I am currently preparing a book proposal. Its provisional title is 'Movement is the Raw Material of Dance'. My impetus to write this book stems, partly from requests from students and teachers.
But, also, I think it's important to codify and synthesize these ideas in print. I am also considering this material for a PhD.

Accessing the elusive in the teaching of Dance
My workshops aim to demonstrate how an understanding of the structure of human movement can provide an accurate tool for observing, creating, performing and teaching dance. We discover together how an application and utilization of some of Rudolf Laban's theories to the teaching of dance irrespective of style, provides for the identification of the seemingly elusive qualities of dance, such as rhythmicality, musicality, and expression. I challenge the notion that these are "the gifts of the talented few", and demonstrate that they are virtual components of movement itself, which can be explicitly addressed and taught in terms of dance skill.

Movement Analysis and Dance Education - The exploration of the nature of the relationships between movement and sound/dance and music
During this workshop I will introduce the basic elements of sound which when organised give rise to music, in the same way as choreology identifies the basic structures of movement which when organised give rise to dance. In this way I hope to provide a common language for speaking about sound and music and to encourage an objective dialogue. This workshop will attempt to develop the ability to hear the sounds of music beyond pulse and melody and become aware of how this affects what and how we observe the movements of dance.

"Rosemary Brandt Practice" workshop for Directors, Actors, Dancers, Movement Directors and Choreographers
The workshops offer an introduction to Rudolf Laban's concepts which are used to explore ways of creating, performing and perceiving movement in performance. They are practically orientated in order to encourage experience of a range of movement material.
While the workshops focus on the body in performance, attention will be concentrated on identifying those aspects which contribute to "watching the movement speak". We start by recognising the spontaneous patterned way in which we participate in our everyday lives and by testing our observations of this pattern. From this source we explore the process of making deliberate movement choices in relation to intention and comment on what we see. For this purpose we need first to identify the visible structures of movement so that we can talk about change, when and how something becomes something else.

Movement Analysis and Dance Education - Choreutics
Laban presents a theory of spatial harmony; a unity of movement and space based on the fundamental idea that space is a hidden feature of movement and movement a visible aspect of space. I will introduce some of Laban's scales, with an emphasis on the A scale. Discussion and investigation include notions such as opposition, symmetry, asymmetry, equilibrium, stable/labile forms. The scales will demonstrate movement principles in operation. Investigation will include observing participants' current practice, serve as a creative tool for dance making and as a model for analysing existing dance works.

Movement Analysis and Dance Education - Choreological Order
This is an introduction to principles of movement and in particular natural affinities between certain movement structures, why and how these occur and how as artists we can break or rupture simultaneous and sequential order. This understanding often de-mystifies access to technique and reveals a choreographer's personal 'language'.

"Rosemary Brandt Practice" workshop for Directors, Actors, Dancers, Movement Directors and Choreographers
Rudolph Laban looked upon movement as a two-way language process through which the human body could communicate by giving and receiving messages. He believed an understanding of this neglected language would lead to a better means of understanding people. The Laban technique introduces students to certain basic movement principles to which all living matter conforms. Once we know 'where' we are going in space, we must observe and analyse 'how' we are going and 'what' kind of movement energy we use. This course will help you understand the organic structure of movement.
